MIAO

They belong to the Miao-Yiao sub-group of the Mon Khmer group. They are found in the eastern Wa and Kunlon regions and Yunnan in China. They are also found at Sinkaing region. Some call these people Miao Si. They had never been to the plains until the 1957 Union Day celebrations. There are all together four different Miao sub-groups: Miao, Red Miao, Black Miao and White Miao.
The women tie their hair at the top of their heads and wrap it with a long black shawl.. This shawl is sometimes 11 meters long. This headdress is pointed at the front and looks enormous on the head. The women wear loose and long sleeved jackets that come down to the knees. Younger women will wear multi- coloured jackets but the older people will wear darker tones. The men wear black, baggy trousers and a jacket, /tightly buttoned, over a shirt.
They either wear big hats or loose headdresses. Dried gourds are used to make a kind of flute. The first bosom has precedence over everybody.
A modern Miao couple. The triangular head-dress of the girl is supposed to remind them of their native place on an island, shaped like a triangle, before they migrated to Myanmar. The flat hat of the boy is supposed to represent the moon.
