RAWANGS

Rawangs are one of the six Kachin stocks. Some British records refer to them as "Nungs". Rawangs live mainly in Northern Kachin State in the Hukaung Valley, the upper reaches of the Malihka river, Hkaunglanfu region in the Putao district. The chieftains wear cane hats decorated with the tusks of wild boars. The dominant colour of their dress in black. Both sexes usually wear small cane rings or hoops around their upper calf area of the legs. In olden days everybody wore earrings of either silver or brass.
Agriculture is the main livelihood of the Rawangs but also engage in animal husbandry; the animals are usually pigs, poultry and oxens. Horns, skins and tusks of the various animals are usually sold. "Ma Chit U" (Fritillaria royeli) is highly valued and also commands the highest price. Other herbs, medicinal plants and many local forest-produce are also traded as they can be used to cure various ailments.
The name of the tribe must be included when naming new-born babies.
