MARU

It is also one of the Kachin stock. According to the linguists they are grouped under the Proto-Burmese Group. Maru are also know as Laungwaw+. The Maru home is in Sadon township and the hills of the Lawkhaung Hill Tract. They plant rice in the valleys and other corps on the hillsides but it is a subsistence economy only. Some male Maru wear the longyi and warp a cloth around their bodies. Some have topknots on their heads. Females usually wrap a htamein around their bodies but it is not sewn. Pre-pubescent girls cut their hairs crudely in a kind of a topknot but girls of age warp a black cloth high in their heads. The females also ware hats decorated with multi-coloured tassels. Amber beads and silver necklaces are worn around their calf. The chieftains carry a ceremonial broadsword.
It is prohibited to come up to the house from the front and exit through the backdoor immediately and the offender is liable to a fine demanded by the owner of the house. Gongs, longyi, sword, spear, buffalo, pig, silver coins and beads are items of choice for paying the fines.
