Ministry Of Mines

Introduction
           Ministry of Mines is the administrative ministry responsible for the mineral sector in the development of the economy of the country. All naturally occuring minerals found either above or underground within the sovereignity of the state or all naturally occuring minerals found in the Continental Shelfare State property and the prospecting, exploration, production, processing, storing, selling and the sustainable production and use of minerals, industrial minerals, stone and gem stone, for the long-term are being administred in accordane with the relevent mining laws of the country.
           With the introduction of the market oriented economic system joint venture operations for the production ofgemstone, tin tungsten, copper, gold and pearl are being carried out, both with local and foreign entreprenuers and organisations. The objective is to produce more mineral products to cater to the local needs and promoting export, with investments from sources inside the country and foreign investment.
           There are altogether two departments and six enterprises under the Ministry of Mines with a sanctioned strength of 27,493 out of with 15,917 have been appointed.
           Activities of the Ministry of Mines for the period from 1 April 1995 to 14 November 1997 are as follows:-

Activities
           The main activities of the departments and enterprises under the ministry for the period under review are as follows:-

(a) Department of Planning and Inspection
           The department is responsible for supervision of the mines according to the Myanmar Mines Law, inspection, mineral conservation, mining related environmental control, safety and welfare of miners.

(b) Department of Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration
           The department is responsible for geological survey, geological mapping, mineral exploration and metallurgical research. Exploration for diamond, gemstones, gold, platinum, uranium, tin, tungsten, coal, silver, lead, copper, antimonial lead, chromite, manganese, iron, asbestos, dimension stones, gypsum and limestone, was carried out all over Myanmar, Exploration for 10 different minerals was also carried out in seven main border areas as part of the programme for Development of Border Areas. In addition to the above, exploration teams were sent out to various areas upon receipt of information regarding minerals occurence from higher authorities and also from the public. The department is also working in joint venture with foreign companies for mineral prospecting, exploration feasibility study of base metals including gold, copper, lead, zinc and platinum. During the first round 14 blocks were awarded to 6 companies and during the second round 9 blocks were awarded to 5 companies and the compaines are now in various stages of mineral propecting and exploration. For the third round exploration, 13 blocks were offerred on tender basis and two companies have been selected so far and arrangements are being made for the signing of agreements. It is expected that new mines would emerge from the highly prospective blocks and efforts would be made for the development of the areas.

(c) No I. Mining Enterprise
           No. 1 Minig Enterprise deals mainly with the production processing and export of base metals such as silver, lead, zinc and copper. I . During the period under review the following products were produced and exported from Bawdwin,Namtu, Yadanatheingi and] Bawsa-ing Mines.
