HKAMTI SHANS

They are one of the 9 ancient Shan principalities: Gon Shans, Bigger Shans, Lesser Shans, Red Shans, Shan Tayoks, Maingtha Shans, Kwe Shans and Mogaung Shans. In the Kachin State there is a region know as Hkamtilon plateau and the Shan tribes living in this region were called Hkamti Shans. In ancient times this region was a vassal of the Monyin and Mogaung Shan principalities and there were reported to be 8 generations of Hkami Shan princes that governed this region. The photograph is of the last generation of these princes.
Putao is situated approximately in the center of Hlamtilon plateau and when the British colonial administration made Putao the administrative capital for the region Putao became well known. Sometimes when the weather is fine, a beautiful panoramic view of the distant snow-capped mountains can be clearly seen. The Hkamti Shan are all Buddhist and engaged primarily in agriculture, Jinghpaw, Rawang and Lisu tribes live in harmony with the Hkamti Shans.
