The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism was established on 24 September 1992 to
raise the momentum of tourism industry. The objectives of Hotel and Tourism are to
bring about employment opportunities; to raise the living standard; and to earn a
large amount of foreign exchange in a short period. Besides, through the friendship
strengthened, the nation can gain cultural benefits and preserve and protect the natural
resources and ancient cultural heritage. |

The earnings from the tourists contribute to the economy of the State.
The yearly foreign exchange earnings are as follows: |

According to the Travel Agencies concerning the tourist stay in Myanmar
hotels, the average stay was 8 days. The daily expenditure was about US $ 80. |
|
Among the visitors to Myanmar, 70.6 % was from the Asian Continent,
18.5 % from Western Europe, 6.5 %o from America and 4.4 % from other regions. Taiwanese
and Japanese from Asia comprised a majority of the visitors to Myanmar whereas French
comprised a majority from Westrn Europe. |

Concerning the domestic hotel enterprises, according to the statistics,
up to January 2001, there were 24 hotel projects with 4281 rooms with the investment
of US $ 558.03 million. |
|
18 State-owned hotels with 892 rooms have been rented to private
entrepreneurs. The investment were $ 0.25 million and K 58.65 million. |
|
The 8 hotels with 316 rooms were run by the State with the investment
of K 1312.19 million. |
|
There are 498 hotels, motels and inns with 11292 rooms run by private
entrepreneurs and the amount of investment is US $ 4.90 million and K 14417.02 million. |
|
According to the Act of Myanmar Hotels and Tourism, 582 travel
agencies, 4854 licenced tourist guides and 444 licenced tour vehicles are operating
the tourism industry. |
|
Entry Visas for tourists were extended to 28 days with effect
from 14 March 1998 and business visas were extended to 70 days. The numbers of tourists
entered through ports, airports and border checkpoints were, 392782 persons for the
period up to January 2001. |
