Myanmar has adopted a market-oriented economy, and in line with this policy, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries is striving to promote the livestock and fishery sector of Myanmar.
For the economic development of the livestock and fishery sector, the Government and the Ministry has laid down short-term and long-term plans and associated strategies. This includes prevention and conservation of resources for fish/shrimp and other marine components, assisting farmers in rural livestock development through distribution of pedigree breeding stocks, animal feeds, veterinary biologics and therapeutic medicines, prevention and treatment of livestock diseases, promotion of the bee-keeping industry etc.
There are five Departments, one Enterprise and one Institute under the Ministry of livestock and Fisheries, and the main functions of the Institutions are as follows:

Directorate of Livestock and Fisheries
Directorate of Livestock and Fisheries is directly responsible to the Minister for livestock and Fisheries, and formulates plans, coordinates, supervises, monitors and evaluates the performance of the livestock and fisheries sector of the Union of Myanmar. The Directorate also gives guidance on formulation of projects and conducts foreign relations.
The Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries was seperately formed to actively concentrate on the development of the livestock and fishery of the Union of Myanmar, and to acquire foreign exchange for the country. To achieve this, the following training programmes were conducted from 1983.
