HUMAN SETTLEMENT AND HOUSING |

Activities of Public Works
|
|
Public Works is undertaking four primary functions.
These are - the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges and upgrading
works of the same, which are the main functions of the Ministry of
Construction, the construction and maintenance of the budgetted works of
airfields assigned by the Ministry of Transport and the construction and
maintenance of the budgetted works of factories, offices, hospitals, colleges,
schools and buildings assigned by other Ministries. |

To draw up the feasibility and implementation of the urban and regional
planning of the whole country.

To draw up the feasibility and implementation of the property development of
the whole country.

To manage and maintain the Government land in the Yangon City Development Area.

To manage the Government buildings and housing estates.
-
To carry out the feasibility study and planning of the water sanitation of the
whole country.

To carry out the Yangon City Underground Water resources.
-
To supervise the budgeting of the development in accordance with the allotted
budget.

To assist in the development projects of the border areas and to carry out the
implementation of the development as laid down by the Central Body and
Authorities.

The Department of Human Settlement & Housing Development is
upgrading the living standard of the people by promoting the urban and regional
development, by establishing industrial zones at the new satellite towns. It
also enhance the productivity of the economy and create job opportunities for
the people. |
|
In doing so, it has launched a new strategy to solve the
housing problem. Formerly, it has only been, a "Complete Housing Scheme" to
solve the scarcity of housing and have now increased the momentum by initiating
the following strategies: |

Furthermore it also undertakes the Water and Sanitation
Projects. Estate and Land Management and Foreign Earning Projects. |

Urban Redevelopment Schemes
|
To be in line with the Urban Regional planning, the
slum area and low class
housing along the main roads of the Yangon City have been redeveloped. Thus
over 8000 units have been built according to the "From the Hut to the Apartment
Schemes". Also in the "High Class Housing Complex and Commercial Complex
Schemes", over 2000 units have been built in the suburbs like Kyauktada,
Lanmadaw, Botataung, Pazundaung Bahan, Tamwe, Thingangyun, Ahlone, Kamaryut,
Hlaing, Insein and Mayangone Townships. |

Sales of Residential and Industrial Plots
|
|
With the objectives of developing industries, thus
promoting production and creating job opportunities for the people and for the
recovery of the budget which the Department of Human Settlement & Housing
Development have spent for the development, about 300000 plots of land for
residential use have been sold at Mine Thayar, Shwe Pyitha and Dagon Myothit
and 3746 plots, 2057 acres for industrial use. |

Implementation of Smooth and Rapid Communications
|
|
For the smooth communications, laterite and asphalt concrete
roads have been built according to the needs of the situation. Thus AC roads
have been built along the Mine Thayar north-south connecting roads, the roads
of Industrial Zones (1), (2), (3), (4), (5) and the roads of Shwe Pyithar and
Dagon Myothit which connect the main wards and related industrial zones.
Furthermore, other roads in the new satellite towns are now being upgraded. |

Water and Sanitation Works
|
|
Feasibility study have been done for the provision of
water supply and sanitation for the whole country. Thus planning and
implementation of water supply for the estates, issuing of license for artesian
wells within in City Development Area and drilling of artesian wells in the new
towns are being carried out. |

Housting & Estate Management
|
|
The department is responsible for the management of housing
estates. Government buildings, civil buildings and other nationalized buildings
in the Yangon City as well as 29 towns in the whole country. Rental charges
have been realized every year for renting 14 buildings to the diplomats. |
|
Land Management
|
|
The Department of Human Settlement & Housing Development
has handed over the jurisdiction of Land Management to the Yangon City
Development Committee on the since 1 July 1992 and is responsible only for the
management of government lands in the Yangon City Development Area. |
|
Foreign Exchange Earning Projects
|
|
As a source of Foreign Exchange Income, the Department
is embarking on the scheme of leasing the Department of Human Settlement &
Housing Development owned land and renting buildings to various embassies,
commercial and international bodies. Forming of joint venture enterprise for
investment with the domestic and foreign companies are also being carried out. |
