Activities of Public Works
|
|
|
Public Works is undertaking four primary functions.
These are - the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges and upgrading
works of the same, which are the main functions of the Ministry of
Construction, the construction and maintenance of the budgetted works of
airfields assigned by the Ministry of Transport and the construction and
maintenance of the budgetted works of factories, offices, hospitals, colleges,
schools and buildings assigned by other Ministries. |
|
-----TABLE(Special Project Implemented by the Ministry of Construction)---- |
|
|
|
Public Works is constructing new roads and upgrading and
minataining the existing ones year by year with accelerating momentum. There is
a marked increase of 3489 miles of roads from 14753 miles of roads in 1988, to
18242 miles in July 2001. |
Previously, roads were constructed north to south
along the geographical orientation of the mountain ranges and rivers in
Myanmar. As it was difficult and very costly to construct long-span bridges,
roads were being conducted along the natural course, avoiding most of the river
crossings wherever possible. There were also 11 roads of 2452 miles designated
as the Union Highway maintained by the Mnistry of Construction. Today east to
west horizontal highways are being added to the existing north to south
vertical highways to form a road network system of Union Highways. Thirty-five
horizontal highways of 9450 miles and 45 vertical highways of .5692 miles
making a total of 80 highways of 15142 miles were designated as the Union
Highways by proclamation 5/84 of the Special Projects Implementation Committee
convened on the 14 December 1994. |
|
Roads are being upgraded in stages from earth roads to
metal roads and bitumen roads and these are further upgraded successively from
single lane to double lane, four-lane and six-lane roads. For a rapid and
smooth flow of goods and commodities through the establishment of a secure and
smooth transportation system, existing bitumen roads are being upgraded to
double lane, four-lane and six-lane roads. |
|
Public works is undertaking the bitemen overlaying
works as per yearly annual budget allotments and has completed 581 miles in
1994-95, 452.25 miles of new roads in 1995-96, 896.3 miles of new roads in
1996-97, 373.1 miles of new roads in 1997-98 and 329.45 miles of new road in
1998-99. |
