SPORT |
| The Ministry of Sports,
formed on 18 December 1997, oversees all the sports activities in Myanmar.
Myanmar Sports and Physical Education Committee is promoting sports in
accordance with the slogan, "Myanmar sports - the world to conquer." Minister
for Sports chairs the Myanmar Sports and Physical Education Committee. There
are 14 State and Division Sports and Physical Education Committees and 308
Township Sports and Physical Education Committees to take charge of sports
activities in their respective regions.

Myanmar OlympicCommittee

The Myanmar Olympic Committee was formed in 1946 and
was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the following year.
There are 36 sports federations formed under the committee. Minister for Sports
is Chairman of the committee and the Director-General of the Sports and
Physical Education Department acts as its General Secretary. The committee's
main responsibility is to support Olympic and regional sports meets. The
committee trains sportsmen and sportswomen, makes arrangements to enable them
to take part in international meets and oversees Olympic-related events

The Department of Sports and Physical Education
|
| The department of Sports and
Physical Education is under the Ministry of Sports and acts as a link between
the Ministry, Myanmar Olympic Committee and the Sports and Physical Education
Committee to carry out their tasks.

Institude of Sports and Physical Education
|
| The Institute was opened on
27 July 1996. It is located on the 147-acre Kyaikkasan sports ground (former
race course), Tamwe Township, Yangoon. Training on sports and education began
on 1 August 1997. The institute trains boys and girls on football, volleyball,
track-and-field, boxing, weightlifting, judo, swimming, badminton, gymnastics
and Thaing (Myanmar martial arts) and at the same time allows them to continue
their schooling. The trainees receive their formal education from the fifth
standard to matriculation level and the training lasts from one to six years.

Sports Grounds and Gymnasiums
|
| There are 223 sports grounds and 78
gymnasiums throughout the country . Most well-known among them are Aung San
Stadium, Aung San Gymnasium, Youth Training Centre, National Indoor Stadium 1,
National Swimming Pool and Dagon North International Swimming Pool in Yangon
and Bahtoo Sports Ground in Mandalay.

Sports Meets and Activities
|
| The biennial National Sports
Festival, Myanmar Traditional Boat Regatta at Kandawgyi, Yangon, sports meet
for the disabled, state and division sports meets and school sports meets are
the most important events.

Marathon
|
| The marathon, sponsored by
the Yangon Mayor, is the most popular event. International athletes, well-known
marathon runners from the country and amateurs took part int the event. It has
been held since 1991 and in the 1995 marathon, more than 60000 runners
including those from foreign countries took part.

Myanmar Taditional Boxing
|
| Myanmar Traditional Boxing
challenged the western boxing at the matches of Myanmar-Australia-America
boxing international held at Yangon on 9 and 10 June 2001. In the
Myanmar-Australia European Boxing tune-up, Tun Tun Oo of Myanmar beat Nathan
Croucher of Australia. In the traditional matches, world golden belt champion
Doug Evans was beaten by Myanma Traditional boxer Wun Chai in the first round
knockout and won a golden belt.

International Sports Competitions
|
| Myanmar Sports contingent
took part in the 21st South East Asian Games which was held in Kuakalumpur,
Malaysia from 8 to 7 September, 2001 and bagged 19 gold, 14 silver and 53
bronze medals, in 19 sporting events. The Ministry of Sports, with the close
colaboration with the National Sports Federations, sent the athlets and sports
competitions, goodwill sports meets and invitational sports competitions, and
had achieved many prizes and medals and thereby had raised the dignity of the
country.

Disabled Athletic Team in ASEAN Games
|

| Myanmar Disabled Athletic
Team won 40 gold, 24 silver and 14 bronze totalling 78 medals at the first
ASEAN Games for the Disabled held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 26-30 October
2001.

| 55th World Amateur Men's Body
Building Champainships, Mr. Universe 2001 Contest 55th World Amateur Men's Body
Building Champainships, Mr. Universe 2001 Contest hosted by Myanmar and were
held at the National Indoor Stadiumin Thuwana on 21 st November to 26 Novermber
2001. In the closing ceremony, Executive Assistant to the President and
Chairman of the Judges Committee Mr. Rafael Santonja presented the service
award of IFBB to the Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Vice-President of the IFBB
for Asia and General-Secretary of ABBF Mr. Paul Chua presented gold order
awards of IFBB to Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and Mayor U Ko Lay.
Altogether 79 bodybuilders from 51 countries who took part in the championship.
The four bodybuilders from Myanmar took part in the four divisions out of seven
divisions of the prejudging contest.
