SCHOOL
|
Myanmar's school have a standard education
curriculum with seven years of compulsory primary education and another five
years in secondary education. All students are required to attend school
beginning from the age of five. Myanmar had 23 universities in the year
1993/1994, 10 two-year collages in the year 1993/1994 having 260,277 students
and 6,696 teachers.
In addition. there are 142 technical and
vocational schools with 31,164 students and 2,342 teachers. There is also an
academy for development of national groups with 964 students and 92 teachers.
There are 36,499 primary schools: 2,062 middle schools and 858 high schools.
Currently, there are 166,412 basic education teachers, teaching 8.15 million
basic education students, which gives Myanmar 93% literacy, one of the highest
literacy rates in the Far East.
Many new independent schools have sprung up
recently teaching English, particularly business English. Other independent
schools are teaching computers and other high technology subjects.
There may be good opportunities for foreign
universities and colleges to set up joint ventures with local partners for
foreign universities.
In Malaysia, some British universities have
entered into 'Twinning' agreements with Malaysia colleges, whereby the first
two years can be spent studying in Malaysia and the last year in the United
Kingdom. If British universities were to set up similar Twinning arrangements
with Myanmar universities, costs to students would be reduced and even more
Myanmar students could obtain British degrees.
Now that Myanmar are permitted to maintain US
dollar accounts in Myanmar Banks and these balances are starting to accumulate,
Myanmar will increasingly be able to send their children to be educated
overseas.
Foreign investors should consider the following educational statistics and
remember that with such high rates of literacy and a good command of English,
employees can be expected to learn more quickly than Vietnamese and workers
from P.R.C. whose command of English is not as good: remember also that most of
the best technical books are written in English, enabling workers to become
proficient more quickly.
